OneDrive Support Ending Windows 10: What Businesses Need to Check

OneDrive support ending Windows 10 is the latest Microsoft change that businesses need to understand, particularly if they still operate computers using older Windows 10 releases.

From 15 August 2026, Microsoft will stop releasing OneDrive sync-app updates for devices running Windows 10 version 21H2 or earlier. This does not mean every Windows 10 computer will immediately lose access to OneDrive, and it does not mean files will suddenly disappear.

The change does mean that affected installations will no longer receive new OneDrive features, reliability fixes, compatibility improvements or security updates. Microsoft has indicated that OneDrive sync-app updates will continue on Windows 10 version 22H2 until October 2028.

For businesses, this is an important distinction. The immediate priority is not to panic or begin replacing every computer. It is to establish which version of Windows each device is running, whether it remains securely supported and whether a controlled Windows 11 migration is required.

What Is Changing with OneDrive Support Ending Windows 10?

Microsoft is aligning OneDrive support more closely with the lifecycle of the Windows operating system beneath it.

Windows 10 reached its general end-of-support date on 14 October 2025. Although Windows 10 computers did not stop working on that date, the standard operating system stopped receiving routine security and reliability updates unless the device was enrolled in an eligible Extended Security Updates programme.

Microsoft is now introducing a separate support boundary for the OneDrive synchronisation application.

From 15 August 2026:

  • Windows 10 version 21H2 and earlier will stop receiving OneDrive sync-app updates.
  • Existing OneDrive installations may continue operating.
  • Microsoft does not guarantee that unsupported installations will continue working indefinitely.
  • Bugs or compatibility problems discovered later may remain unresolved.
  • Security weaknesses in the unsupported sync application may not be patched.
  • Windows 10 version 22H2 receives a longer OneDrive support period.

The key date for OneDrive on Windows 10 version 22H2 is currently 10 October 2028, which corresponds with Microsoft’s extended period for security updates to Microsoft 365 applications running on Windows 10.

Will OneDrive Stop Working on 15 August 2026?

Microsoft has not said that OneDrive will be remotely disabled on affected PCs on 15 August 2026.

A computer running Windows 10 version 21H2 or earlier may continue to:

  • Sign in to OneDrive.
  • Display synchronised folders.
  • Upload and download files.
  • Use Files On-Demand.
  • Synchronise documents with SharePoint.
  • Open cloud files through Microsoft 365 applications.

However, continued operation should not be mistaken for continued support.

An unsupported application can appear to work normally for weeks or months before a later Microsoft 365, authentication or operating-system change introduces a problem. At that point, the unsupported client may fail to sign in, synchronise files incorrectly or encounter a compatibility issue for which no fix is released.

That uncertainty is the primary business risk.

A reliable file-synchronisation platform is often central to daily operations. Employees may use OneDrive to protect desktop documents, share files between devices, collaborate through Microsoft Teams or access files when working remotely.

Waiting until synchronisation fails is therefore a poor migration strategy.

Which Windows 10 Versions Are Affected?

The OneDrive change affects devices running:

  • Windows 10 version 21H2.
  • Windows 10 version 21H1.
  • Windows 10 version 20H2.
  • Windows 10 version 2004.
  • Other earlier Windows 10 releases.

Devices running Windows 10 version 22H2 are not included in the August 2026 cutoff and should continue receiving OneDrive sync-app updates until October 2028.

It is important to check the actual Windows version rather than assuming that a PC is current because it regularly restarts or displays a message saying that updates have been installed.

A device can install all available updates for an obsolete Windows release while still remaining on that obsolete release.

How to Check Your Windows 10 Version

The simplest method is to use the Windows version command:

  1. Press the Windows key and R together.
  2. Enter winver.
  3. Select OK.
  4. Read the version displayed in the window.

A supported Windows 10 computer should show:

Version 22H2

You can also check through Settings:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System.
  3. Select About.
  4. Locate Windows specifications.
  5. Check the Version field.

Businesses should not rely on staff checking their own computers individually. A managed IT provider can produce a central inventory showing the Windows release, build number, hardware specification, encryption status, available disk space and Windows 11 compatibility of every managed device.

Why Might a Computer Still Be Running an Older Version?

There are several reasons why a Windows 10 computer may have failed to reach version 22H2.

Updates Have Been Paused

A user or administrator may have paused Windows Update and never re-enabled it. This is common on laptops that are only used occasionally.

Insufficient Disk Space

Large Windows feature updates require working space on the system drive. Computers with nearly full C drives may repeatedly fail to install the update.

Update Errors

Corrupt Windows Update components, damaged system files or conflicting software can prevent feature updates from completing.

Device Management Policies

A business may have configured policies that defer feature updates. These policies can remain in place long after their original purpose has passed.

Incompatible Drivers

Older storage, graphics, chipset or security drivers can interfere with Windows feature updates.

The Computer Has Been Offline

Spare laptops, workshop computers and home-working devices may remain disconnected from the company network for long periods.

Legacy Business Software

Some businesses deliberately retain an older Windows version because a specialist application, machine or peripheral depends on it.

This last category requires particular care. Updating Windows without first testing the dependent software could interrupt operations. Leaving the computer permanently unsupported, however, creates an increasing cybersecurity risk.

Why Unsupported OneDrive Software Is a Business Risk

The most visible concern is that files may eventually stop synchronising, but the risk is broader than that.

Missing Security Updates

Cloud applications handle authentication tokens, file transfers and access to business data. A vulnerability in an unsupported sync client may remain unpatched.

Cybercriminals frequently target applications that have trusted access to cloud services because compromising one application can provide access to a much wider collection of information.

Silent Synchronisation Failures

OneDrive problems are not always obvious.

A user may continue working in a local folder without realising that new files are no longer uploading. The familiar folder structure remains visible, but the cloud copy becomes increasingly outdated.

This can create a false sense of protection.

Collaboration Problems

Employees may see different versions of a document if one person’s computer is no longer synchronising correctly. This can lead to overwritten work, inconsistent customer records and duplicate documents.

Compliance Concerns

If a business relies on OneDrive or SharePoint to control, retain or protect documents, an unsupported endpoint can weaken that process.

The organisation may struggle to demonstrate that information is consistently protected and maintained across all company devices.

Authentication Changes

Microsoft regularly updates its cloud authentication systems. Unsupported clients may eventually encounter sign-in or token-refresh problems following a cloud-side change.

Lack of Vendor Assistance

When unsupported software develops a problem, Microsoft can reasonably require the business to update the operating system before investigating further.

This can turn what would have been a routine support request into an urgent migration.

Does Updating to Windows 10 22H2 Solve the Problem?

Moving an older Windows 10 device to version 22H2 avoids the immediate OneDrive cutoff in August 2026.

However, this should be viewed as a temporary measure rather than a complete long-term solution.

Windows 10 itself reached general end of support on 14 October 2025. Although Extended Security Updates can provide additional protection in eligible circumstances, Microsoft recommends moving compatible devices to Windows 11.

Updating to Windows 10 22H2 may be appropriate when:

  • A business needs more time to replace old hardware.
  • A critical application has not been approved for Windows 11.
  • A short-term compatibility issue prevents immediate migration.
  • The device is already scheduled for replacement.
  • An Extended Security Updates plan is in place.
  • The device is isolated and tightly controlled.

It should not become a reason to postpone migration indefinitely.

Should Businesses Upgrade to Windows 11?

For most compatible business computers, Windows 11 is the preferred destination.

A managed upgrade provides:

  • Continued Windows security updates.
  • Current OneDrive compatibility.
  • Better support for modern Microsoft 365 features.
  • Improved protection based on newer security hardware.
  • Longer application compatibility.
  • Reduced risk of an emergency migration later.

Before upgrading, businesses should assess:

  • Processor compatibility.
  • TPM 2.0 availability.
  • Secure Boot support.
  • Installed memory.
  • Free disk space.
  • Application compatibility.
  • Printer and scanner compatibility.
  • Encryption recovery keys.
  • Backup condition.
  • User profile and OneDrive status.

A Windows 11 upgrade should not be treated as a simple button-press across an entire company.

Testing is particularly important where the business uses accounts software, label printers, older Microsoft Access databases, specialist production systems, USB licence devices or industry-specific applications.

What If the Computer Cannot Run Windows 11?

Some otherwise functional Windows 10 computers cannot officially run Windows 11 because they lack a supported processor, TPM 2.0 or another required security feature.

Businesses generally have four options.

Replace the Computer

This is normally the most sensible option for an important workstation that is used every day.

A modern replacement provides a supported operating system, current hardware, a manufacturer warranty and improved performance.

Retain It Temporarily with Extended Security Updates

This may be suitable when the computer is due for replacement but cannot be changed immediately.

It should have a documented replacement date rather than remaining in service indefinitely.

Restrict Its Use

A legacy computer may be isolated from general email, web browsing and cloud access while continuing to control a specific machine or application.

Network restrictions, application controls and limited user permissions should be applied.

Move the Legacy Application

Where possible, the application should be migrated to a supported computer, virtual environment or modern replacement platform.

This may require help from the software supplier.

Installing Windows 11 through an unofficial hardware bypass may work technically, but it is not usually the best choice for a managed business environment. Future updates and vendor support cannot be assumed.

OneDrive Is Not a Complete Backup

This support announcement is also a useful reminder that file synchronisation and backup are not the same thing.

OneDrive provides valuable protection through:

  • Cloud synchronisation.
  • Version history.
  • Recycle Bin recovery.
  • Known Folder Backup.
  • Files On-Demand.
  • Sharing controls.

However, changes made locally can synchronise to the cloud. This includes accidental deletion, unwanted modification and in some cases encrypted or corrupted files.

Businesses should consider a separate Microsoft 365 backup covering:

  • OneDrive.
  • SharePoint.
  • Exchange Online.
  • Microsoft Teams data.
  • Shared mailboxes.
  • User mailboxes.

A separate backup can provide longer retention, independent recovery and protection when Microsoft 365 accounts are deleted or compromised.

What Businesses Should Do Before 15 August 2026

A structured approach is more effective than checking devices reactively.

1. Create a Complete Device Inventory

Identify every Windows desktop, laptop and specialist workstation used by the organisation.

Include home-working devices, spare laptops and computers kept at secondary locations.

2. Record the Windows Version

Confirm whether each Windows 10 device is on version 22H2 or an earlier release.

Do not rely solely on the device name or purchase date.

3. Check Windows 11 Compatibility

Establish which devices can be upgraded and which require replacement.

4. Identify Business-Critical Dependencies

Record software, printers, scanners, machinery and peripherals that could be affected by an operating-system change.

5. Confirm OneDrive Health

Check that users are signed in, current folders are synchronising and no unresolved errors are present.

6. Verify Backups

Confirm that important Microsoft 365 data has a recoverable backup rather than relying entirely on synchronisation.

7. Update Eligible Devices

Move older Windows 10 installations to version 22H2 where this is appropriate as a temporary risk-reduction step.

8. Plan Windows 11 Migration

Create a phased migration schedule for compatible devices.

9. Replace Unsupported Hardware

Prioritise computers that cannot run Windows 11 and are used for sensitive or business-critical work.

10. Document Any Exceptions

Where a legacy computer must remain, record the reason, responsible person, security controls and planned replacement date.
